The YDD Annex

Because One Blog Is Never Enough

And... We're Off. Again.

Apparently my host's MySQL server is blowing drives, so that they are having to replace the entire server. As always, I have a complete local backup of the YDD, including the pair of posts I managed to put up during the short time window in which things were working. Again, apologies. Not their fault; not my fault... but the blog is still not up. If the YDD is down for long enough, I'll resume blogging here.

Computers do not like instant on-off cycling.

Not telling people this was going to take place is a rather major screw-up. I assume that they relied on the on-site back-up power systems, which is always a bad idea.

Noticed I couldn't get on to either of you guy's blogs... hope they didn't snarf the servers completely.

Do these companies usually have copies offsite? Or is it actually feasible to lose all of your blog archives?

ellroon, the guy who runs our host is very diligent about maintaining multiple copies of everything for data integrity. Indeed, that is one of the things taking so long in getting everything running again... he's triple-checking everything to make sure it's right.

There are some catastrophes against which one simply cannot protect if all one has is a single hosting site with a bunch of servers. I am dismayed but not furious; our host is doing what he can.

FWIW, I always keep at least one offline copy of the YDD on an external HD which I plug in only to make a backup... i.e., if my computer gets fried, that disconnected external HD presumably survives. There's usually another fairly current copy on my laptop. And unless the servers and my desktop computer get fried simultaneously (I don't want to go there!), that's one more current copy, one place or the other.

Bryan, I concur. The things jdw has said on the status site lead me to believe he is aware of the flaw and would like to have some sort of distributed system at multiple locations. It's a tough service for a relatively small business to provide.

andante, welcome to the outhouse, um, the annex. Technology has not been my friend today... cell phone dropping calls, etc., and to top it off, I am involuntarily part of the "Blog is dead" movement. I'm going to try now to put up an actual post, with real content, on the annex...
